If you're new here- welcome! If you do not know what a DID System is, we are! We live with Dissociative Identity Disorder. This is a trauma disorder, you cannot be born with it. Dissociative Identity Disorder [DID] is formed through the mind trying to survive extreme repeated abuse/torture.
We cannot be a single person again. People who do not have DID are called "Singlets" and we are called "Plural/s". There are other plural Systems who are known as living with OSDD- Other Specified Dissociative Disorder. OSDD does not meet the diagnostic requirements for DID, however, is still a dissociative based disorder and they can have alters.
An alter is one way to call each individual that shares one body, we also just say people. Each System is different in which terminology they use.
People who live with Dissociative Identity Disorder often struggle with suicidal ideation. The lack of education on DID is not only harmful to those trying to process the awareness of living with this disorder, it also can be deadly when turned into bullying and pushing denial of DID agenda. Denial of DID are those people who lack the mental capacity to fully understand or process our existence and instead make our existence supernatural or try to debate the validity of our existence. PSA- our existence is not up for debate, we are here, we exist. Take a moment and try to visualize and feel what it would be like if society as a whole decided to walk by you and pretend your very real existence was not valid. What would that do to your psyche? This is what alters/people who live as a DID System and plural, experience nearly every day.
DID itself is ingrained with denial as a defense mechanism to hide the System. System is a term that is used to address us alters living in one body, collectively.
